Acrylic on 28 x 16" canvas.

Exploring the idea of protection as a woman. Leather, a literal second skin, was worn by the original lesbian biker groups of the 1980s San Fransisco scene. These biker jackets provided protection not only in their material, but also through their visual clan status; if you’re with the pack, you have more chance of protection. Metaphorically however, this second skin forms in the name of love, the strongest protector of all. A hand on the shoulder, someone wanting you home safe, your desire to stay protected amplifies when the concern of your wellbeing lies within someone you love. Surviving out of love for someone else, and then in turn, loving thyself.

The jacket is protection, but who is the real leather? The material, or the lover?
