BELCHER CHAINS AND SADDLE RINGS (2024)
A short film directed and created as a finale to Campbell's series of painted works, 'Belcher Chains & Saddle Rings'. The film documents an installation of a piece on the landmark of the artist's estate: Boothferry bridge, Hull. Shot on a bombed out canon in broad daylight, capturing the essence of council life in visual and poetic form.
Belcher chains and saddle rings is a series exploring Rio's council estate roots of council culture, whilst encouraging finding true pride on your doorstep. Despite the blanket of lower income that weighs over working class estates, the prevalence of jewelry - an expensive item - remains. With stereotypes of big gold chains, often gifted from a parent to a child, receiving jewellery is like the door being opened into trust and adulthood. The series pushes the stereotype to be viewed through a lens of heirloom and into a symbol of family, dedication and love - the foundations of council life.
