I AM GOD //
DEVOUR GROUP SHOW.
This three part series is Cambo's open exploration into femininity, queer constructs and history.
Despite appearing so, the work is not directly reflective of religion. Instead, it probes thought on self- perception, and the standards by which we internally oppress ourselves.
Visually, the work takes reference and inspiration from the image and tone captured in Phyllis Christopher's 'Dark Room', which explores the San Fransisco queer communities from 1988-2003. During this period, queerness was at its most oppressive, yet most liberated state. With nothing to lose, these communities pulled together in protest and love, to bring the freedoms we enjoy today.
Captured in photo are protesters, often holding signs challenging the idea of God: 'God is a dyke', 'God is a Woman', 'God is a black lesbian'. This humbles the notion of 'God', whilst simultaneously elevating queer identity. A fearless, liberating act; fusing two previously polarised ideals into the same comparable standard.
So the question is not of who god is, but of why we don't feel it within us. Sin? internalised homophobia? Why aren't you free? Why aren't you god?
